I congratulate Premier Jeremy Rockliff following Labor’s lead on UTAS, GBE reforms, Stony Rise and the Port Latta windfarm in the past few weeks.
If the Premier is serious about getting our economy back on track, I’ve got another policy for him to jump in behind on.
Early this month, I announced Labor’s bold Night Time Economy Strategy, aimed at revitalising Tasmania’s nightlife and supporting local businesses.
Tasmania’s nighttime economy has untapped potential – we need to make sure our cities are fun, safe, and open for business around the clock.
Events like the ones hosted by the Way Music Group create enjoyable social offerings for young people and help grow the nightlife industry in Hobart – making it a more desirable place for young people to live and work.
But the hospitality sector and small businesses like Way Music Group are being strangled by strict council regulations and unnecessary red tape.
Labor’s strategy will cut unnecessary permits and costs for late-night venues, outdoor dining and festivals struggling to find sustainable business models. It will also support live music and arts venues by offering liquor licence fee rebates for venues that promote live entertainment.
We’ve seen other places in Australia, like the Minns Government in NSW, and cities around the world, adopt 24/7 economy strategies – I won’t let Tasmania fall behind.
My vision is for an exciting Tasmania where businesses thrive, workers are supported, and Tasmania becomes the easiest place to do business so that we can build a reputation for being the best place to grow up, work and retire.
The Liberals have shown they’re willing to adopt Labor policies in recent weeks, and we suggest they get on board with this one too.
