Regional tourism is one of the pillars of Tasmania’s economy, supporting more than 40,000 direct and indirect jobs across the state.
The colder months have traditionally been quiet for regional tourism in Tasmania, and this winter, without the boost of Dark Mofo, operators are facing added uncertainty.
After surviving twin blows from devasting bushfires and then COVID, Tahune Airwalk – a Tasmanian tourism icon – needs all the support it can get. The business has a plan that can be activated to boost its offering and get more people travelling down into the far south – but it needs a little help from Jeremy Rockliff to do it.
Along with a boost to Tahune Airwalk, there is a need for further clarity from the government around the Transformer project. This was the project which was promised to the Huon Valley to rebuild its economy after the 2019 bushfires. Yet five years later and it has only just been approved. The question now is, when will it finally be built to give this area the boost its needs?
We need a plan for tourism that backs in jobs and gets more people into Tasmania’s regions. I am looking forward to working with operators across Tasmania to make sure they are being supported.
