Billionaire gets a sweetheart deal while Homes Tasmania goes broke

By Josh Willie MP - Labor Leader

Billionaire gets a sweetheart deal while Homes Tasmania goes broke

After 13 years, the Liberals’ priorities are all wrong.

Homes Tasmania has gone broke and failed to deliver the homes Tasmanians need. Meanwhile, a billionaire has been handed a sweetheart deal to lease MyState Bank Arena for less than a family in Glenorchy pays in rent.

The contrast is staggering.

The Auditor-General has revealed Homes Tasmania burned through its entire $546 million borrowing limit in less than four years and needed almost $200 million more.

When the Liberals set up Homes Tasmania in late 2022, they promised it would deliver housing faster. Instead, the housing waitlist is at a record high, and the Liberals are now winding up the agency they said would fix the problem.

Minister Vincent still can’t explain how its replacement, Building Tasmania, will work or how it will deliver 10,000 social and affordable homes.

Premier Rockliff was asked whether the arena deal was a good deal for Tasmanians. He couldn’t say yes. He dodged the question and fell back on the excuse it was made under different circumstances.

The Liberals can give a billionaire a sweetheart deal, but they can’t deliver the homes Tasmanians desperately need.

Now Tasmanians are paying for 13 years of Liberal waste through cuts to the jobs and services they rely on.
