Concerning new doubts over AFL license due to Rockliff’s stadium delays

06 March 2025

With more reports of unrest among AFL club presidents casting doubt over the Tasmanian license, Jeremy Rockliff needs to front up and provide some believable assurances that his stadium build is on track.

The Age has reported that the AFL has agreed “to a demand from club presidents that they be allowed to vote again on the licence for Tasmania’s team if the goal posts for the team’s entry to the competition shift.”

Labor supports a stadium because it will generate desperately needed jobs and secure the AFL and AFLW teams our state deserves. We want to see it built.

We have previously called on the Premier to commit to the POSS decision coming before the Parliament by 30 Jine 2025, as per the license agreement. He couldn’t, which in the context of the AFL club president’s renewed unrest, is extremely concerning.

With record members and a great off-field setup, the Devils are firing on all cylinders in every area that doesn’t involve the Government. The biggest risk to their future is Jeremy Rockliff’s Minority Liberal Government’s failure to deliver.

Tasmania can’t afford Jeremy Rockliff to stuff up the stadium like he stuffed up the Spirits. He needs to start providing some confidence he can get this stadium built before the growing unrest among club presidents turns into his next disaster
