Labor supports a stadium being built, and it’s a fact that it must be approved by both houses of Parliament if that is going to happen.
Jeremy Rockliff made the decision to take the stadium out of the POSS process, but this won’t stop Labor scrutinising his handling of the project, just like we’ve done with the Spirits.
Yesterday, I wrote to the Premier to seek a briefing and request further information about how he intends to meet the promises he’s made to Tasmanians, and seek clarification about the Government’s position on a roof following comments made by Minister Eric Abetz. I also sought access to the Office of Parliamentary Counsel for any amendments Labor may seek to make on the Premier’s enabling legislation.
The Premier’s bill will need to pass the Legislative Council, and we want to make sure it’s in the best possible shape to do so.
This is about making sure that unlike what we saw at Berth 3 for the Spirit of Tasmania, a stadium is built, and that it is the best project for Tasmania it can be.
Jeremy Rockliff can’t afford to stuff this up like he stuffed up the Spirits, and Tasmania can’t afford him to either.
Labor will continue to scrutinise this project, not because we want to stop it, but because we want to see it built on time and on budget.
