Government legal fees skyrocket under Liberals

By Ella Haddad MP Shadow Attorney-General Shadow Minister for Integrity

03 August 2026

Expenditure on Government legal fees has exploded by an extraordinary 1,442 per cent in the last three years of the Liberal Government.

Right to information documents obtained by Labor reveal that for the year up until March 2026, $1,583,700 was spent on Government legal fees.

The documents show that to the same period in 2023, only $102,679 was spent, before the numbers skyrocketed year on year after that.

In June, the Premier was forced to admit that Tasmanians were paying nearly $1 million on legal fees on both sides of secret legal dispute between former Liberal Ministers and the Integrity Commission.

While not all legal spending is shrouded in the same level of secrecy that saw two Ministers resign this year, the rate in which spending has exploded over the past three years is cause for alarm.

The Liberals need to explain today why we’ve seen such an increase, and what the money is being spent on.

After 13 years of Liberal waste, Premier Rockliff has put Eric Abetz in charge of cutting jobs and services to pay for it, but Tasmanians are paying more for legal fees than ever.
