Parliament returns this week with Premier Rockliff under pressure to step up and protect Tasmanian jobs and secure the future of our major industrials.

Bell Bay Aluminium must secure a long-term power agreement with Hydro Tasmania. More than 500 Tasmanian workers and their families depend on it.

More than 200 jobs were lost at Liberty Bell Bay, and with Hawthorn shutout and Boag’s shutdown the north is hurting.

Across the state, 5,700 jobs have already been lost since the Liberals sold out Tasmanian workers to stay in power last August.

Bell Bay Aluminium cannot be next.

Hydro was built to power Tasmania, back industry, create jobs and support regional communities. 

The Government should be securing the industries and workers already here, and at the same time delivering enough new generation to attract the industries of the future.

After 13 years of Liberal incompetence and waste, Tasmania should not have to choose between the two.

We could have both, but the Liberal government has made Tasmania the hardest place to invest and build renewables.

This week, Labor will demand Premier Rockliff and Energy Minister Nick Duigan do their actual job and deliver Bell Bay Aluminium’s power agreement to secure Tasmania future.

One major industrial has already shut on Nick Duigan’s watch. We can’t afford an Energy Minister who can’t deliver when Tasmanians need him to.   

Tasmanians need a government that can plan for the future and protect jobs. 

Right now, this government can’t do either.
