Hobart cost of living rising fastest in the country, $250 TasInsure promise in tatters

By Dean Winter MP Shadow Treasurer

29 August 2026

Premier Jeremy Rockliff’s signature election promise to save Tasmanians $250 a week through TasInsure is in tatters, as new Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) figures reveal Hobart now suffers from the highest insurance increases in the nation.

Instead of the relief they were promised, Tasmanian families are being hit from every direction while the Liberal Government fails to deliver on its word to ease pressure on household budgets.

Unless you’ve got a vintage TasInsure hat, jacket or stubby holder, TasInsure hasn’t delivered you a single thing.

Today’s concerning figures show Hobart has recorded the highest rate of inflation across all Australian capital cities at 4.2 per cent, driven by skyrocketing costs in essential areas:

  • Housing inflation: 9.8 per cent – a full 3 percentage points ahead of the national average
  • Alcohol & tobacco inflation: Highest in the nation at 6.4 per cent
  • Insurance & financial services inflation: Highest in the nation at 3.8 per cent
  • Food & non-alcoholic beverages inflation: Highest in the nation at 3.5 per cent
  • Furnishings, household equipment & services (including childcare): Above the national average
  • Recreation & culture: Above the national average

These inflation figures come alongside recent ABS jobs data and the Deloitte Business Outlook, both confirming Tasmania’s economy is shedding jobs.

After 13 years of Liberal waste, the Rockliff Government has no answers for the cost-of-living crisis it helped create. All Tasmanians are getting from this Government is cuts to the essential services they rely on.
