Justice razor gang is in, what about the other departments?

Eric Abetz’ unprecedented budget cuts are becoming more than just numbers on a page.

Late last month, the Justice Secretary wrote to staff to advise them of “revised vacancy management” measures as the Department’s razor gang attempts to slash the workforce.

Staff were told that vacancies will go unfilled and that, because there will be fewer staff, some work will have to be delayed or stopped altogether.

As well as adding pressure to a workforce already enormous strain, these reductions have the potential to result in even worse court backlogs and reduced access to important services like Legal Aid and Safe at Home family violence services.

We know the Justice Department isn’t alone.

Labor has been inundated with tip-offs from people working in and interacting with departments across government that were struggling to cope before Eric Abetz’ cuts, and will find it impossible to cope after.

Today, Labor is calling on the Liberals to come clean on whether any other departments or agencies have implemented similar “revised vacancy management” measures to meet Abetz’ extreme targets.
