Great education gives young Tasmanians access to well-paid, safe, and secure jobs. 

In a desperate attempt to fix their billion-dollar budget disaster, the Liberal-Lambie experiment are set to cut at least $75 million from education over the next three years as part of their $300 million efficiency dividend cuts.

During Parliament’s last sitting, the Liberal-Lambie experiment voted to keep the details of cuts to other departments hidden from Tasmanians. We already know that the Department of Fire, Police and Emergency Management are being forced to find $35 million in cuts, but the Liberals have refused to be upfront with the breakdown of their $300 million budget cuts.

Given that education spending accounts for 25% of the State budget, it is logical to assume that cuts across education will be at least $75 million also.

With Tasmania’s education results already lagging the mainland and falling further behind, the last thing the Liberal-Lambie experiment should be thinking about is cutting at least $75 million from education.

The Liberal Government have mismanaged the economy for the last decade, but that doesn’t mean Tasmanian teachers and students should be the ones to suffer.  

Labor will not stop trying to get to the bottom of what these cuts will mean for our Tasmanian schools and students. Tasmanians will be rightly wondering why the Jacqui Lambie Network won’t do the same
