Liberal policy to boost housing delivers less housing

15 November 2024

Not only has the Liberal minority government failed to deliver on their election promise to deliver additional homes to their private rental incentive scheme, but they’ve actually made it worse.

During the election campaign the Liberals promised to deliver an additional 200 homes to their private rental incentive scheme, but since they were sworn into government, they have delivered… negative two. That’s right, they’ve gone backwards.

According to an RTI obtained by Labor, no additional properties were added to the program between March and October and two households were told to vacate their home after the lease ended.

They can’t be trusted to deliver on any of their announcements, and now they can’t be trusted to not make things worse. Only Felix Ellis and this incompetent Liberal government could be responsible for such a ridiculous headline.

This same Minister was forced to admit in July that the Liberals had only built six homes in six years under their “fast-track” housing policy, while also confessing they were counting vacant blocks of land towards their new build target.

The Liberals have failed to deliver on housing for a decade. Their signature housing policy – establishing Homes Tasmania – has delivered almost nothing. They’ve built just six homes on the 1000 “fast-tracked” blocks the Parliament has rezoned. Their signature planning policy – a single statewide planning scheme – still has not been delivered more than a decade after it was promised.
