Premier can’t be trusted on Wilkinson’s Point deal

18 June 2026

Josh Willie MP

Labor Leader

Premier can’t be trusted on Wilkinson’s Point deal

After a week which saw the Premier censured for integrity and transparency issues, you’d think he might have learned a lesson.

Apparently not.

Today, the Premier couldn’t deny that his Government was leasing out MyState Bank Arena – a $150 million public asset – to one of Australia’s richest men for the net return to taxpayers of about $25,000 per year.

To put it into context, that’s less than the median rent in Hobart.

Premier Rockliff also confirmed he is barrelling ahead with a deal to sell the land despite an Auditor General report finding serious failures with the process, and warnings from State Growth that it could cost Tasmanian taxpayers up to $100 million.

The land is currently under consideration for potential rezoning, but the Premier couldn’t guarantee he would protect any uplift in value from that process for Tasmanian taxpayers.

After 13 years of Liberal waste, it seems Tasmanians are now watching another secret deal unfold behind closed doors.

Tasmanians struggling with the cost of living will be appalled to realise the Premier is more interested in keeping a billionaire happy than giving them a helping hand.
