Retail trade slump continues under Liberal minority government

31 October 2024

The Tasmanian business community has lost confidence in this government, and the latest data from the ABS shows that consumers have too.

Retail trade has recorded 0% growth every month for the past seven months. It’s yet more evidence of Tasmania’s economic decline under Premier Rockliff’s minority Liberal government.

The fact is Premier Rockliff has wrecked the budget, and his unstable minority government seems incapable of getting anything done.

It's why six thousand jobs have been lost since Premier Rockliff started governing in minority, and why Tasmania has crashed down the national economic leaderboard.

The Premier needs to do more to boost the economy and business confidence after the peak business body, the TCCI, recently said it would be difficult to trust the Minority Liberal Government again in the wake of the ferry fiasco.

Premier Rockliff could get on with implementing Labor’s plan for double day sailings, which would bring more tourists to Tasmania and provide a welcome boost for our retailers.
