Rockliff running scared from Spirits scrutiny

18 November 2024

The Spirits fiasco is the biggest infrastructure stuff up in Tasmania’s history and has become an international embarrassment.

Premier Rockliff has let Tasmanians down again by pulling out of this afternoon’s PAC hearing at the eleventh hour and refusing to face scrutiny over his government’s stuff-up.

He’s happy to wear hi-vis and a hard hat in Devonport for the media, but he doesn’t have the guts to sit at the committee table and be held accountable for his actions.

This is exactly why Labor is calling for an oversight committee because this government can’t be trusted, and Tasmanians are still in the dark about how things got to this point.

The Tasmanian Chamber of Commerce and Industry has said it will be hard to ever trust this government again and people are demanding answers about how this could have happened.

There’s been a complete lack of openness and transparency from the Liberal minority government throughout this saga and today was a chance for the Premier to change that.

Instead, he’s trying to avoid scrutiny and shirk responsibility for the biggest infrastructure stuff-up in Tasmanian history.  Leadership starts at the top and Tasmanians deserve a Premier that is willing to be open and upfront.

Labor has been relentless in holding this failing government to account, and we will continue to seek answers from Premier Rockliff for this mess.
