Savage cuts or blow the budget? Which one is it Treasurer?

24 September 2024

This morning in Estimates, Treasurer Ferguson stood by the fact that the Liberal minority government is outrageously projecting the only expenditure reduction in 20 years in the 2024-25 state budget.

Negative growth in government expenditure hasn’t occurred in the past twenty years (see chart attached).

Under the Treasurer’s previous two attempts in 2022-23 and 2023-24, spending yielded an increase of 8.5% and 14.7%, respectively.

Why does Treasurer Ferguson think this year will be the year he breaks the streak?

There are only two possible outcomes. Either the Liberal minority government will continue to blow the budget, or they will be making savage cuts across the public sector.

Josh Willie MP
Shadow Treasurer
