Shocking data reveals extent of Liberals’ housing neglect

25 June 2025

Shocking data has revealed exactly why it’s time for a Fresh Start for housing after 11 years of the Liberals.

RTI documents from Homes Tasmania (attached) show that as 31 December 2024:
  • At least one family with children in the north-west has waited for over 9 years as a priority applicant on the housing register
  • At least five families across the state have waited for between 7-8 years as priority applicants on the housing register
  • Seven families across the state with children have waited for between 6-7 years as priority applicants on the housing register
  • At least two applicants without children have waited for between 10-11 years as priority applicants on the housing register.
  • 138 priority applicants waiting for five years or longer
  • 20 people died in the last 24 months while waiting as priority applicants
It is absolutely disgusting that a Tasmanian family with children has been waiting for over nine years as priority applicants for housing.

These kind of wait times are indefensible, but the housing horror stories under Liberals don’t stop there, with more than 20 families spending over five years on the waitlist.

After 11 years of the Liberals, wait times have become so long that 20 Tasmanians died while waiting for housing in only two years.

The Liberals will continue to spread the falsehood that they are meeting their social housing targets, but when Minister Felix Ellis is counting vacant blocks of land and hotel rooms for locum doctors as completed homes they can’t be taken seriously.

After 11 years of the Liberals, housing in Tasmania needs a fresh start. Not more of the same from the Liberals who spend all their time manipulating figures to make it seem like they are doing something.
