Standing in support of Liberty Bell Bay workers

Standing in support of Liberty Bell Bay workers

Tasmanian Labor acknowledges the urgency and seriousness of the situation at Liberty Bell Bay.

We stand in support with the over 200 workers and their families, as well as the hundreds more flow-on jobs which rely on business from the smelter.

The workers at Liberty Bell Bay are the only crew of workers in the country who know how to operate this site and we’ve got their back.

Tasmanians across the state are already struggling with the cost-of-living, with families struggling to pay their bills and put food on the table. The extra pressure this situation must be placing on families with at-risk jobs is unimaginable.

Every lost job means less money in family budgets, less spending in local businesses, and more pressure on a regional economy already under strain.

This is not just another business, it is Australia’s only manganese alloy smelter, a nationally significant industrial asset.

The consequences of failure would be felt across the entire Tasmanian economy, and State Government has a role to play and can't shirk its responsibility.

Workers and Tasmanians expect cooperation during this difficult time and it is critical that all levels of government work together to ensure workers can keep being paid and jobs are protected.
