Unemployment rate highest in nation, 1,800 job cuts on the way

After 13 years of the Liberals, Tasmania’s unemployment is the highest in the nation, and our economy is the worst performing.

Not only is the unemployment rate the highest in the nation, it is the highest we have seen in Tasmania since COVID. 

Today’s ABS data shows Tasmania is at the bottom of the pile for each of the data set’s four major employment markers:

• Highest rate of unemployment in the nation, at 5.2 per cent.
• Highest rate of underemployment in the nation, at 7.1 per cent.
• Lowest employment to population ratio in the nation, at 57.5 per cent
• Lowest participation rate in the nation, at 60.6 per cent

The sobering news follows CommBank ranking Tasmania’s economy dead last in nation earlier this month.

After 13 years, the Liberals have left Tasmania with the worst-performing economy in the country, rising unemployment, spiralling debt, and a downgraded credit rating.

They have sold out Tasmanian industries and workers, failed to protect jobs, and now they are taking an axe to their own public sector workforce.

Rather than deliver a genuine plan for economic growth, Eric Abetz is cutting services Tasmanians rely on and sacking 1,800 workers.
