Vale Aunty Patsy Cameron AO

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Aunty Patsy Cameron AO.

On behalf of Tasmanian Labor, we extend our sincere condolences to her family, loved ones and the Tasmanian Aboriginal community.

Aunty Patsy devoted her life to opening doors for others and ensuring Aboriginal knowledge, history and culture would be carried forward by future generations.

Through her work in Aboriginal education, including helping establish the Riawunna Centre at the University of Tasmania, she helped create places where Aboriginal students could pursue their ambitions with pride in who they are.

We recognise the lasting significance of that work. Its legacy lives in the people who gained an education, found their voice, and went on to create opportunities for others.

Through her writing, community leadership, and the sharing of culture on Country, Aunty Patsy also invited generations of Tasmanians to deepen their understanding of this island and its Aboriginal people.

From her historical research to her children’s books, she leaves a gift of knowledge that will continue to teach and inspire.

We honour Aunty Patsy’s enormous contribution to Tasmania and extend our sympathy to everyone mourning her loss.
