Tasmanians have a clear choice this election – more of the same from the tired Liberal Government, or a fresh start under Labor.
In 2014, the Liberals inherited a state with no net debt. Eleven years later, Tasmania has the worst budget position in the country, with net debt forecast to hit a staggering $13 billion - and still, the Liberals deny there’s even a problem.
In fact, Felix Ellis on radio yesterday described it as “modest debt”. The Liberals still haven’t delivered a cent in savings. Instead, they’ve put another half a billion dollars on the credit card for future generations to have to pay down.
This Government is reckless, incompetent and arrogant. They’ve overseen Australia’s worst infrastructure failure – forgetting to build a berth for the new Spirits of Tasmania, which are now stranded across the globe. If you can’t trust them to manage an infrastructure project, how can you trust them on anything else?
They certainly can’t be trusted with Tasmania’s public assets. Just a few months ago, Jeremy Rockliff declared about his privatisation policy: “I won’t be dropping it, because I believe in it”. You can’t trust a word he says.
Rockliff says he cares that Tasmanians are doing it tough – but his actions show otherwise. His flagship election policy is TasInsure, a sham insurance scheme that has no business case, no expert support, and no guarantee it will save Tasmanians a single cent.
This is the policy he wants Tasmanians to put their trust in?
After 11 years of Liberal failure, our health system is in crisis, Tasmanians are doing it tougher than ever, young Tasmanians are leaving in droves, and our debt is the worst in the nation.
Tasmanians simply can’t afford four more years of this Government. It’s time for a fresh start and only Labor has a plan to deliver it.
