A fresh start for multicultural communities

A fresh start for multicultural communities Main Image

Key Points

A Dean Winter Labor Government will recognise that Tasmania is built on migration and we will value our growing multicultural communities in Tasmania.

A Dean Winter led Labor Government will take action on racism and increase penalties for race related crimes.

Labor will:

  • Appoint a Minister for Multicultural Affairs
  • Create a series of new offences to deal with hate-related crime
  • Work with the Multicultural Council of Tasmania and other community organisations to develop an education campaign to reduce racially motivated crime
  • Create an Anti-Racism taskforce and whole-of government anti racism strategy

Why we need it

While the vast majority of Tasmanians welcome and value our multicultural communities, sadly racially motivated offending is far too frequent.

Recent data from the Multicultural Council of Tasmania shows that 66% of respondents to their survey felt racism was either a ‘big’ or ‘very big’ problem.

“Labor values our multicultural communities and a Dean Winter Labor Government will take action on racism.”
